Title: Essai sur les Origines du Judaïsme. De Josué aux Pharisiens
Author: Nodet, Étienne
Type: Book
Year: 1992
Abstract: "N., professor at the Ecole biblique de Jérusalem, offers a series of suggestions on a number of much debated issues relating to the development of Judaism. Many data have been brought to light in recent years, and N. subjects these to a new analysis. In particular, he examines the general historical context from the Persian period to the Pharisees, the observance of sabbath (dating this back to Joshua's military practice), the emergence of the Samaritans and their Pentateuch, the causes of the Maccabean uprisings, the beginnings of rabbinic life and work (from Simon the Just to Hillel), and the complex of issues surrounding Ezra and Nehemiah. N.'s most intriguing suggestions deal with the relationship between the Samaritan Pentateuch, already in written form, and the oral and written traditions brought back by returning exiles from Babylon. Judaism sprang from that encounter. Further, according to N., the witness of Josephus in assessing the development of the Samaritans is clouded on two grounds, i.e., he intended to show the continuity between the Jews and the ancient Israelites, all the while denying the legitimacy of the Samaritans and wanted to appear as a Pharisee, even though he was not. The volume is extensively annotated". - John Rybolt
