| Title: Two Examples of Josephus' Narrative Technique in His "Rewritten Bible" Secondary Title: JSJ Volume: 27 Pages: 31-45 Type: Journal Article Year: 1996 Abstract: in: AnPh 67 (1996), 206: "Étude de la réécriture par Josèphe de la péricope de la ligature d'Isaac (AI 1,223-224) et de l'épisode des Sodomites (AI 1,194-195). L'aménagement narratif dont elle témoigne procède d'une volonté de présenter un judaïsme cohérent valorisant l'histoire juive".
"Given Josephus' interest in theodicy, those biblical stories that overtly questioned the notion of God's righteousness presented particular challenges to his rhetorical and narrative skills. The article examines Josephus' presentations of the biblical narratives about Abraham in the face of God's demand to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22) and God's plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18:22-33) in Antiquities, and shows how his use of sophisticated narrative methods enables him to convince his readers that even those stories demonstrate God's righteousness. Josephus not only omits problematic material (a common practice in the "rewritten Bible" genre) but also restructures the biblical information according to clearly strategic considerations. No other exegete of Scripture in late antiquity was as aware as Josephus of the potential power of narrative". - D.J.H. Keywords: Specific Examinations of Josephus, collections of Josephus |
