Abstract: "In what follows, I try to draw what I believe to be an accurate and simple picture of what we are told about the Pharisees before 70 by several groups of sources. What emerges is the picture of two sets of Jews - the ones for whom the Gospels speak, on the one side, the ones described in the laws assigned to authorities before 70 in the later rabbinic writings, on the other side - who really are talking about different things and therefore are unable to address the issues important in common".
