| Title: The Last Days and Hours at Masada Secondary Title: BArR Volume: 17 Pages: 20-32 Type: Journal Article Year: 1991 Abstract: "Since the terrain forced the Roman attackers to concentrate on one portion of Masada's outer wall, the Zealot defenders probably dismantled the inner casemate wall and built a wood-and-earth wall directly behind the outer wall at the point of attack (see Josephus' War 7:311-314). This pliant wall would have had the effect of absorbing and dispersing the force of a battering ram. To build it the Zealots scavenged from the roofs of their buildings about 4000 long wodden beams and hundreds of shorter beams. The Romans defeated the tactic by setting the wood on fire.
