JSJ 27 (1996), 202: "The article compares A 7:318-334 with different version of II Sam 24,1-25 and I Chr 21,1-22,1. Begg concurs with E. Ulrich [The Qumran Text of Samuel and Josephus, Chico 1978] that Josephus employed a Greek form of a Samuel text that is very close to 4QSam. Josephus, however, made use also of traditons preseved only in I Chr or in extrabiblical sources [various Midrashim, Thucydides], accounting for a fair number of additions. His "version of the census episode is more 'transparent' and deliberately dramatic than its biblical sources while also being flatter and less thelogically provocative than they".
