| Title: Josephus's Version of Jehu's Putsch (2 Kings 8.25-10.36) Secondary Title: Anton. Volume: 68 Pages: 450-484 Type: Journal Article Year: 1993 Abstract: "The article compared Josephus' narrative of Jehu 's coup (Ant. 9:105-139, 159-160) and its biblical source (2 Kgs 8:25-10:36; cf. 2 Chron 22:1-9) as it is attested in various ancient witnesses. It seeks to determine (1) which biblical text(s) Josephus used, and (2) what additions, omissions, rearrangements, and modifications Josephus' version manifests vis-à-vis the source story, and why and with what effect he introduced such changes. Although Josephus used 2 Kgs 8:25-10:36 rather than 2 Chron 22:1-9, it is not clear what text-form(s) was available to him. While Josephus was content (for the most part) to take over the existing biblical story, he did take the liberty to modify the source on a minor scale. Josephus found nothing problematic with the biblical source 's portrayal of Jehu 's divinely mandated butchery of anyone even tangentially associated with Ahab". - D.J.H. Keywords: Antiquities |
