Abstract: "Josephus' writings provide the earliest evidence for the common genealogical origins of circumcision as practiced by Jews and Arabs, and for identifying the descendants of Ishmael among the peoples of the contemporary world, classifying them as "Arabs" and taking as the prime group among the "Arabs" the Nabataean inhabitants of the kingdom whose capital was Petra. Thus Josephus had an important posthumous role in the formation of Islam". - D.J.H.
