| Title: The End of Prophecy and the Closure of the Bible in Judaism of Late Antiquity Secondary Title: Sidra Volume: 9 Pages: 83-94 Type: Journal Article Year: 1993 Abstract: in: JSJ 27 (1996), 234: "The dominant positon in Rabbinic Judaism - thus e.g. in Seder Olam Rabba 30, Tosefta Sota 13:3 and parallels - is that prophecy and inspiration by the Holy Spirit ceased in the Persian period; this agrees with the position widely held in Second Temple Judaism - see e.g. 1 Macc. 4,46 and Josephus Flavius. The position found in Yerushalmi Ta'amit 2:1,65a and parallels that prophecy ceased already with the destruction of the First Temple, derives from exegetical constraints".
