"This analysis of Josephus' narrative of Ahab's death (see 1 Kgs 22:1-35; 2 Chr 18:1-34) divides the text into four "moments": the initial royal encounter (Ant. 8:398-399), the prophetic consultation (8:400-410), and Ahab's death in battle (8:411-415); and Ahab's burial (8:416-420). In comparison with the bible Josephus accentuates the equality and harmony of the Ahab-Jehoshaphat relationship, just as he gives us a more magnanimous, reflective Israelite ruler. He plays down somewhat the role of Micaiah, while enhancing that of Zedekiah. In explaining Ahab's end he invokes the "power of fate" rather than with Scripture tracing it back to God. Josephus' narrative is more transparent, tightly integrated with its context, and overtly didactic, a far flatter one, stripped largely of the ambiguities, ironies and puzzlements that gibe the scriptural story its hold on readers". - D.J.H.
"1 Kön 22,1-35; 2 Chr 18,1-34 berichten vom Ende des Königs Ahab. In Ant. 8,398-420 erzählt Josephus erneut von diesen biblischen Begebenheiten. Seine Version ist von verschiedenen Zufügungen und Veränderungen schriftstellerischer Art gekennzeichnet. Dieser Artikel konzentriert sich daher auf einige besonders kennzeichnende Elemente des Berichtes des Josephus. Im einzelnen wird gefragt, wie Josephus die genannten Modifikationen geschaffen hat und welchen Effekt diese Veränderungen bezüglich der Darstellung des Todes Ahabs in der Version des Josephus im Vergleich zur biblischen Quelle erlangen.
