Abstract: "Jubilees, Josephus, Pseudo-Philo and ApocAbr reproduce the wording of Gen. 15:9 rather literally. Otherwise, it is especially the variations in the approaches of their re-readings which stand out. While Jub, LAB and ApocAbr expand on the wording of Gen. 15:9-10,17, Josephus rather reduces it with his non-mention of the apperarance of the fire phenomena. Jub and Josephus stand together in their "sacrificial" interpretation, Pseudo-Philo gives the incident a "symbolic" twist, and in ApocAbr the "sacrificial understanding" is over-shadowed by the "apocalypticizing" approach of the event. The "sacrificial" and the "symbolic" understandings have continued to be live options throughout the history of exegesis". - A. S. van der Woude
