"After establishing the authenticity of Josephus' description of John the Baptist (Ant. 18:116-119), the article discusses some key problems of syntax and interpretation in the Greek text, and presents a new translation designed to bring out the progression of thought. Josephus reduced John to a popular moral philospher in the Greco-Roman mode, with a slight hint of a neo-Pythagorean performing ritual lustrations. Yet he may well have been correct in presenting John' s program as a religios one without an activist political agenda. Josephus agrees to a certain extent with Lk 3:10-14". - D.J.H.
