Abstract: Matthews, Christopher R. in: NTAb 43.1 (1999), 123: "The article highlights Josephus' misogynistic tendencies y considering his portrayal of biblical women, treatment of grounds for divorce (see Ant. 4:253), description of the Essenes, critique of emancipatory tendencies (see Ant. 15:259-260), and wholesale attribution of negative qualities to women. Finally it compares Josephus' presentation with the NT". Hieke, Thomas in: OTA 21.3 (1998), 511: "M.-S. shows that Josephus exhibits misogynic prejudices in his writings, although not to the same extent as other literary works of classical antiquity. In retelling biblical history, Josephus disqualifies women by leaving out certain passages and changing the source's narration, e.g., in case of Deborah (Ant. 5.203). Other examples are Josephus' attitude towards divorce (always possible. Ant. 4.253, as it was for the Hillel school) and his praise for the Essenes that do not marry. Tendencies towards women's emancipation are rejected (e.g., Salome's divorce. Ant. 15.259-260). In several instances Josephus likewise attributes negative qualities to women. In conclusion, M.-S. sees Josephus' conservative reaction to the behavior of the women at the royal court as exemplifying his feeling of insecurity and the growing gap between patriarchal tradition and social reality".
