This hypothesis cannot claim the support of Josephus".
"On the argument that Antiquities revises Bell. Iud. so as to commend the Pharisees to the Romans (cf. M. Smith, "Palestinian Judaism in the first century", Israel. Its role in civilization, New York Harper 1956, 74 ff., and J. Neusner, APh XLV p. 168). Ant. XIII,400-432 cannot plausibly be read as a commendation of the Pharisees".

Neusner, Josephus with his account of Queen Alexandra in Ant. 13:400-432 sought to commend the Pharisees to the Romans by drawing attention to their massive popular support. But this interpretation of Josephus' motives lacks any basis whatsoever. Rather than commending the Pharisees, Ant. 13:400-432 makes ist very clear that their participation in power was a disaster and sealed the doom of the Hasmonean house. "Aufgrund von Antiq. XIII 400-432 vertreten Smith und Neusner die Ansicht, daß die Pharisäer vor 50 v. Chr. nur einen beschränkten Einfluß hatten. M. beschäftigt sich eingehend mit dieser Hypothese und stellt fest, daß in Aniq wie im Bell eine enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Königin Alexandra Salome, ihren Söhnen und den Pharisäern vorausgesetzt wird. Smith und Neusner halten dafür daß Josephus Bell an dieser Stelle überarbeitete um die Pharisäer bei den Römern anzupreisen.
