Abstract: "There are some curious similarities between Curtius' description of Philip Arrhidaeus in the late 4th century B.C. (History of Alexander 10.5-10) and Curtius' romanticized description of Arrhidaeus' accession may have been inspired by the accession of the emperor Claudius, related by Josephus B.I. 2,204-217 and A.I. 19,162-277". "Josephus' accounts of the accession of Claudius in the 1st century A.D. (War 2:204-217; Ant. 19:162-277). The occurrence of similar ignotus episodes in both accounts requires us to postulate that Curtius wrote during Claudius' reign with first-hand knowledge of the events of Claudius' accession". - D.J.H. "The similarities between Curtius' description of the accession of Arrhidaeus at X,5-10 and Ant. Iud XIX,2,1-5,1 not only shed light on the nature of Curtius' presentation of Arrhidaeus, but also make it clear that he wrote during the reign of Claudius".
