Whatever influence Stoicism may have had, Josephus seems to have adopted heimarmene from the terminology of popular Hellenistic astrology to denote the determined governance of the human condition. He presented the Jews as the people who were freed from heimarmene by the providence of God, and who consequently exercised free will and human responsibility in and through their obedience to the Torah". - D.J.H.
