Abstract: "The friendship which Rome granted to and renewed with the Maccabees and the ethnos of the Jews was not and had never been a treaty of friendship, although the Maccabees and the ethnos of the Jews apparently interpreted it as such. Judas and the ethnos seem to have been ignorant of the fact that the Romans no longer deemed a friendship to be a treaty relationship, and that confirmation by the people was necessary for a Roman treaty to be binding on Rome. Moreover, friendship was in the Near East a traditional name for a treaty. Consequently, it is probable that the Maccabees and the ethnos of the Jews believed that they had a valid treaty with Rome". - A. S. van der Woude
