"Taking as its starting point Josephus' comment in Life 10 about the three great Jewish philosophies (Pharisaism, Sadduceeism, Essenism), the article considers the order in which they are named and the terms used in describing them. Next it analyzes and compares Josephus' descriptions of the Sadducees (War 2:164-166; Ant. 13:171-173, 288-298, 18:16-17) and discusses what he said about the Sadducees in the same contexts. Then it focuses on the banquet story associated with Hyrcanus (Ant. 13:288-298) and compares it with the baraita in b. Qiddusin 66a". - D.J.H. "What is understood by Josephus when he speaks about the Sadducees? He consider them well known and therefore does not deal with them at length. A thorough analysis of the texts shows that he prefers to insist upon the Pharisees; thus what one can learn about the Sadducees is due mainly to comparison. Josephus' apologetical bias involves the omission of many essential points of their history: Were they priest? How were they related to the Temple? What was their political history? A critical study of Josephus' terminology and data provides new insights into these questions".
