| Title: Zu ethnographisch-geographischen Überlieferung über die Japhetiten (Gen 10,2-4) im frühen Judentum Secondary Title: Henoch Volume: 13 Pages: 157-194 Type: Journal Article Year: 1991 Abstract: "The Author examines the lists containing geographical and ethnographical names which are to be found in the Jewish literature of the Hellenistic-Roman age, aiming to define in particular Japhet's territory. He also includes more ancient traditions (Gen 10). Among the texts wich are taken into account, are to be registered Judith 1-2 and 1 Maccabees 15,23ff, als well as passages belonging to the pseudepigraphical literature (Jubilees 8-9; 10,27ff); Philo (De somniis II,121ff; Legatio ad Gaium 10; 281ff) and Josephus (Bell. II,358ff; Ant. I,122-129). The book of Jubilees is to be considered most remarkable for its geographical knowledge. The article first gathers geographical and ethnographical statements about the sons of Japeth in various early Jewish writings (1 Enoch 17-36, Genesis Apocryphon, 1 Maccabees, Philos, Josephus). Then it discusses early Jewish references to the Japhethites related to Gen 10:2-4 in Jubilees, Judith, Philo, and Josephus. The geographical knowledge displayes in Jubliees 8-9 is particularly impressive". - D.J.H. Keywords: Interpretation of the Bible in Ancient Judaism |
