Abstract: "Based on a doctoral dissertation directed by I. Gruenwald and accepted in 1987 by the University of Tel-Aviv, this investigation of the origin and development of belief in angels among Jews prior to the rabbinic period first discusses biblical angelology with particular attention to the heavenly court and the roles of the ml'k in the OT. Next it considers the emergence of the Greek-Jewish terminology for angelology (ml'k = a)/ggeloj). Then it traces the development of Jewish belief in angels in various extrabiblical writings, with special reference to the sapiential, liturgical, cosmological, and eschatological tasks carried out by angels. Finally it reflects on certain dangers or problems posed by angels in Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity, and focuses on the distinctive approach to angels taken by Josephus".
