Abstract: "Gen 18-19 is a skillfully composed narrative, probably dating from the seventh century BCE, reflecting that period's idea of divine justice and punishment, and incorporated into the redactional J-layer of the Pentateuch (for which a "late" date seems preferable). The Sodom-and-Gomorrah narrative echoes both ancient reminiscences of a catastrophy in the Dead Sea plain and, in 18:1-16, a polytheistic story from pre-Israelite times. The only later addition to the text ist 19:29 (P). The most noteworthy references to Gen 18/19 in the OT are Ezek 16:44-58 and, representing a variant from of the Gen 18/19 tradition, Hos 11:8. In the NT, Matth 10:15 and Luke 17:22-37, along with a few other passages, are noteworthy". "Loader, professor of OT at the University of South Africa, argues that the Sodom and Gomorrah stories in Genesis 18-19 form a unit that inspired a rich tradition in early Jewish and Christian literature, which also together with other OT texts shows signs of the existence of earlier Sodom and Gomorrah traditions. After examining the narrative in Genesis 18-19 he discusses Sodom and Gomorrah in the rest of the OT, in early Jewish literature (Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Philo, Josephus, rabbinic writings), and early Christian literature (NT, patristic writings)".
