Abstract: "The English version of a doctoral dissertation directed by O. Betz and submitted in 1990 to the Evangelical Theological Faculty at Tübingen, this volume first considers the development of the pist- word group (piste/uw, pi/stij, pisto/j) as faith terminology in secular Greek, the Septuagint, Sirach, and Philo's writings. Then it examines Josephus' use and understanding of the pist- word group as faith terminology, especially in comparison to the use and understanding of this word goup in the NT. Lindsay contends that Josephus was influenced by the traditions of Hellenism and the OT in his (religious) use of the pist- word group whereas the NT knows only the OT concept of faith. An appendix treats Hebrew equivalents for pist- in Sirach".
