Abstract: "The article describes and evaluates two hypotheses that explain the origin and early history of the Qumran community in ways that differ from the one dominant "Maccabean theory". The "Jerusalem hypothesis" proposed by N. Golb posits Jerusalem as the origin of the Dead Sea scrolls, which have no substantial connections with Khirbet Qumran or the Essenes. The "Groningen hypothesis" developed by F. García Martínez and A. S. van der Woude understands the Qumran community as a sect that split off from the Essenes on account of disputes about the Teacher of Righteousness's eschatological and halakhic interpretation of biblical texts". - D.J.H.
