| Title: Josephus on Essene Sacrifice Secondary Title: Journal of Jewish Studies Volume: 45 Pages: 169-183 Type: Journal Article Year: 1994 Abstract: JSJ 27 (1996), 211: "Une étude détaillée des contradictions apparentes dans la description des sacrifices esséniens de Josèphe, A 18:1,5 § 19, permet à Baumgarten de conclure: "I therefore conclude that the sacrifices accourding to their own standards, elsewhere, for which the Essenes were excluded from the Temple, according to Josephus, was offering their own Red Heifers".
"The exclusion of the Essenes from the Temple precints described by Josephus in Antiquities 18:19 was the equivalent of the situation described in rabbinic texts (see m. Eduy 5:6) according to which "the Temple courtyard was shut in the face" of certain individuals. The Essenes did not maintain a full sacrificial ritual of their own outside the Jerusalem Temple. They did, however, offer red heifers on their own because they denied the validity of the red heifers offered by the Temple authorities". - D.J.H.
