Abstract: "The article explores instances of conflict between social strata in the writings of Josephus, the NT, and earlier pre-exilic and post-exilic literature. From the 10th century B.C. down to the 1st century A.D. antagonisms between social strata resulted from the exactions of the monarchy, confiscations of rural property by urban credit0ors, and the corruption of judges. Yet open revolts were rare. It was only in the context of a general breakdown of the Jewish state in the 1st century A.D., brought on by predatory Roman interventions, that open revolt against local elites finally occurred. Yahwehism fostered a preoccupation w9th supernatural solutions to injustice and oppression that possibly hindered the development of secular political programs". - C.R.M.
