| Title: The Pharisaic Paradosis Secondary Title: HThR Volume: 80 Pages: 63-77 Type: Journal Article Year: 1987 Abstract: "Over and beyond what was written in the Law of Moses, the Pharisees observed a msrt, a paradosis that they had received (paralambanein, qbl). The paradosis of the elders and of the fathers was a deliberate attempt by the Pharisees to give their tradition a pedigree (see m. 'Abot 1). In this way they hoped to defend their tradition at a vulnerable point and raise its status from that of a school to the patrimony of the nation. The self-description of the Pharisees, and the responses it provoked among other Jewish groups (e.g. the views of Nicolaus in Josephus Ant. 17:41-45; 1QH 4:14-15, Mt 15; Mk 7) illuminate each other and allow us to see more clearly how the Pharisees wanted to appear and were seen by their contemporaries in Palestine prior to the destruction of the Temple". - C.R.M.
