Abstract: "Mainly on Josephus, Bellum Judaicum 1:656, Antiquitates 17:167-170 in the light of ancient biography". "Josephus' description of the death of Herod should be interpreted in terms of the paradigm, common in the Hellenistic period, that the more villainous a man's character, the more ghastly his death. Josephus fashioned his description of the disease after Thucydides' account of the plague". "Josephus describes the death of Herod in the War and, about twenty years later, in the Antiquities. The second description is more elaborate and shows several differences in detail, owing to an imitation of Thucydides' account of the plague and tendency, known from the talmudic literature, to associate specific diseases with specific sins".
