Abstract: Ruiten, J.T.A.G.M. van in: JSJ 29.2 (1998), 207: "The purpose of this essay is to investigate the possibility to evaluate the personality of Pontius Pilatus on the basis of the primary sources, i.e. Flavius Josephus, Philo of Alexandria, Eusebius, New Testament, coins, and archeological findings. K. concludes that the literary representations of Pilatus are different from each other. Josephus (Ant. Jud.) depicts him as a dark counterpart of Vitellius, Philo (Legatio ad Gaium) as a dark counterpart of Tiberius. In the New Testament (esp. The Gospel of Matthew) Pilatus is depicted in a more positive way, while the negative role is reserved for others. It is not possible to reconstruct out of the different portraits the historical Pilatus. The investigation of the primary sources points further to the conclusion that the role of Pilatus in the trial against Jesus cannot be reconstructed out of his character traits or out of his political attitude. One has to start with the juridical competences of Pilatus and the institutional margins of the local upper class in a Roman province in general, and in Judea in particular".
