Abstract: IZGB 41 (1995/1996), 352: "Gesichert ist lediglich, daß Josephus und seine Vorfahren der Priesterschaft angehörten". Hoppe, Leslie J. in: OTA 20.1 (1997), 134: "Some interpret comments made by Josephus in his autobiography as a claim that he was related to the Hasmonean dynasty. Josephus does leave that impression in Vita 1-8 when he says that his family belonged to the highest circles of Jerusalem society. Still, the conclusion that he was actually related to the Hasmoneas is not based on the evidence. Josephus belonged to a priestly family and any claims he makes about his family simply reflect their position as members of the Temple aristocracy". "Josephus' assertion that he was related to the Hasmoneans is not entirely credible. In Life 1-8, Josephus sought to give the impression that he and his family belonged to the highest circles in Jerusalem. Though they did certainly belong to a priestly family, they were probably not counted among the Temple nobility".
