"The revised version of a doctoral dissertation directed by P. Hoffmann and accepted in 1991 by the Catholic Theological Faculty at Regensburg, this volume argues that Josephus wrote the history of his people to defend them (i.e. apologetic historiography). After remarks on Josephus' works and research on them, it examines the narrative parts of War 2-7, Antiquities 18-20, and Life that describe the Roman use of force and Jewish reactions to it: from the census of Quirinius to the accession of Gessius Florus; Philip and Herod Antipas, Coponius, M. Ambibulus and Valerius Gratus; Pontius Pilate; L. Vitellius; Josephus' assessment of Tiberius' provincial policy; P. Petronius; and so forth. Next it discusses the uprising against Rome in War and Life: the outbreak of the war, the pogroms, the defeat of Cestius, Josephus in Galilee, the situation before Vespasian 's arrival, and so forth. Then it deals with Josephus' presentation of the war under the field-generals Vespasian and Titus. Finally it offers a brief treatment of Josephus' use of Torah exposition as a means of apologetics".
