| Title: Medicinal Drugs in the Works of Flavius Josephus Secondary Title: The Healing Past. Pharmaceuticals in the Biblical and Rabbinic World Pages: 95-105 Type: Book Section Year: 1993 Abstract: "More could be said on therapeutics in Josephus' writings. A whole chapter could be devoted to thermal baths, one could expand on the evil spirits that plagued King Saul and were charmed away by music (Ant. VI, 166); on the "physicians" who advised that a beautiful virgin be selected in order to warm old King David (Ant. VII, 343); on the magic spells and cures that are mentioned - in addition to what has been reported when dealing with the root "baaras". My intention in this study, however, was to remain within the field of materia medica. Among the wealth of data that have been compiled, one passage shows clearly the personal interest which Josephus developed for botanical lore, that is, the description of the High-Priest' s mitre. It is to be hoped that such studies will foster others on the contribution of the Jewish historian to the natural sciences in the Hellenistic period".
