These sources not only contribute to our knowledge of the ruling elite in pre-A.D. 70 Jerusalem but also suggest that the Nicodemus mentioned in Jn 3:1 belonged to this family and help to explain why Naqqai and Buni are listed among the five disciples of Jesus in a rabbinic tradition (see b.sanh. 43a)." - D.J.H.
