Abstract: "A review of pertinent sources in rabbinic literature and Josephus' writings shows that there was in the 1st century A.D. a very prominent Jerusalem family in which the names Gurion and Nicodemus were repeated as characteristic family names. These sources not only contribute to our knowledge of the ruling elite in pre-A.D. 70 Jerusalem but also suggest that the Nicodemus mentioned in Jn 3:1 belonged to this family and help to explain why Naqqai and Buni are listed among the five disciples of Jesus in a rabbinic tradition (see b.sanh. 43a)." - D.J.H.
