Abstract: Begg, Christopher T. in: OTA 20.2 (1997), 300: "B. presents a detailed reading of Josephus' description, in Contra Apionem (CA) 2.102-109, of the Temple and its priestly personnel under the following heads: the courts of the Temple and their restrictions on entry, the shifts of the priests, objects in the Temple, and the priestly courses. The indications given by Josephus on these points in CA differ, in a whole series of instances, both from what one finds in the historian's own earlier writings and in the Mishnah. In evaluating such discrepancies the following considerations should be kept in mind: Josephus' notices may, on occation, reflect the actual practice enforced by the Temple authorities, whereas the Mischna's statements may represent later legal systematizations based on the biblical prescriptions. In other cases, the discrepancies may be due to Josephus' apologetic purposes in the CA massage and/or a faulty memory of the Temple arrangement of his youth."
