The variant is supported by the LXX, and the whole addendum by Josephus. It has been argued that the addendum is a historical complement missing in MT (so F. M. Cross) or, alternatively, that it is a late midrash (so A. Rofé). An analysis of scribal practice with regard to the canonical text shows that employment of formulae, patterns and motifs, applied at times in a representative and stylized manner, facilitated the formulation of learned expansions and amplifications in the creative stage of MT. K. suggest that the 4 Qsama variant pertains to this category, being neither a historical datum nor a late midrash". |
