Abstract: "Using the categories of proper synonymy, improper synonymy, and hyponymy, this article analyzes and organizes the semantic relationships of the eight Greek verbs for "worship" in the Greek NT and in the extant works of Josephus, Philo, and Epictetus. Three clusters of meaning emerge: worship as serving a deity by performing cultic acts in a religious vocation (latreuw, leitourgew, and possibly sebazomai), worship as submitting to divine authority (proskunew, gonupetew, kaámptw gonu), and worship as the exercise of personal piety (eusebew, sebomai, and probably sebazomai). These three clusters are related to one another by improperly synonymous contiguity". - D.J.H.
